Music Notes:

BWV 532 is regarded as a virtuoso piece for organ with much pedal work and pedal solos.

Travelling South is a tone picture of the journey south from Sydney to Canberra / Melbourne.

 

Dr Wilbur Hughes: A retired medical practitioner who studied piano and organ during his medical training. Under the guidance of the late Norman Johnston and David Rumsey he obtained Fellowship of the Trinity College of Music. Further studies were undertaken with Christa Rumsey, Sergio de Pieri, Keith Asboe, Ver Hasselt (St Gervais, Paris) and Peter Hurford (London).

After retirement in 2001, he gained his B.Mus from the University of London principally in composition with tuition from Rita Crews, and the late Professor Eric Gross from Sydney University.

Much encouragement was given to the compositions played today and previous concerts by the musicians performing at this concert.

Claire Munting performed throughout Europe, USA and Australia after her graduation from the Royal Conservatory of the Hague in The Netherlands.

After her graduation Claire was a member of opera company "Della Casa" which performed throughout Europe at venues such as the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt and St. James' Palace in London for the Royal Family.

Her operatic roles include Bizet's Carmen, Eboli/Don Carlo, Fenena in Nabucco, Cavalleria Rusticana's Santuzza, Adalgisa/Norma and La Principessa in Suor Angelica.

She has appeared with several renowned orchestras such as the Britten Pears Orchestra, Con Brio Orchestra, Colla Voce Ensemble and the North Holland Symphony Orchestra.

Claire performed at the Aldenburgh Festival in the UK, the Grachten Festival in the Netherlands, the Glebe Festival in Sydney and the prestigious TNC in New York.

Since moving to Australia, she was invited to perform at the House of parliament in Brisbane, was both soloist and vocal coach for Queensland Music Festival 2013 and is the Artistic Director of Musica! with a festival in 2015 and 2018.

She sang the roles of Badessa and Principessa in Puccini's Suor Angelica with Opera Projects Sydney and created " A Tribute to Maria Callas " which recently premiered in Mosman, Sydney.

Future engagements include concerts for Musica! 2019, a recital at Art Song Canberra, a recital for the Glebe Festival and several concerts in The Netherlands.

 

Conductor, pianist and baritone Harrison Collins studied classical voice at the University of New South Wales before pursuing a Masters of Music in orchestral conducting at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Over the past seven years, Harrison has worked as a music director, conductor, orchestrator and repetiteur on a great number of operas and musicals, including shows with the UNSW theatrical society (NUTS), University of Sydney music theatre society (MUSE), Rockdale Opera Company, Willoughby Theatre Company and many independent production companies. Highlights include music directing shows such as Into the Woods, Spring Awakening, next to normal and Company, as well as working on a number of operas including Suor Angelica, Orpheus in the Underworld and Così fan tutte.

Harrison has a great wealth of experience in orchestration and arrangement, having done complete reductions of the musicals Assassins and Company for small ensembles, as well as full orchestral and small ensemble arrangements of many individual songs and arias for recitals and concerts.

In addition, Harrison has worked as an accompanist and coach with a wide range of singers and instrumentalists across a variety of genres, encompassing the classical, jazz, popular and music theatre repertoires in recital, concerts and for masterclasses and examinations. He is the full-time accompanist for the UNSW choir, and as a lecturer and tutor in harmony and aural skills, works closely with the students on their practical examination preparation.

As a baritone, Harrison has performed as both a soloist (including with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, UNSW Collegium Musicum Choir, and others) and as a long-time chorister (recently with the Burgundian Consort at UNSW, Sydney Conservatorium Chamber Choir, and others).

Wendy Dixon. Soprano, Artistic Director

As a soprano Wendy has maintained a successful international career in opera, oratorio, concert and recital work, and remains an active recitalist. She is an established singing teacher, currently tutoring at Open Academy USyd, the Australian Institute of Music and her own private studio. She is presently enrolled as a Doctoral student at USyd. Wendy is founder and director of Sydney Art Song Society Inc., producer and musical director of Opera Boot Camp Australia, curator of Cushion Concerts at CHIME and artistic director of Divas on Demand. She is a founding member with David Miller (piano) of Grevillea Ensemble renowned for their innovative programs.

 

Olivia Morberger, Soprano

Since beginning her musical studies, Olivia has explored both orchestral and vocal realms but has now landed herself in the world of singing. Olivia has performed as a clarinetist with orchestras at Parliament House, the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, the Sutherland Shire Symphony Orchestra, for various operas and musicals, toured with the Symphony of Australia, and performed at The Art Gallery of NSW and St Andrews Cathedral. With her hands advancing before her age, Olivia lay her clarinet to rest and strolled into the land of big voices and even bigger 'hair.' Since then Olivia has sung with Sutherland Symphony Orchestra, competed in eisteddfodau, performed in the Australian Institute of Music's opera gala, sung with the UNSW Collegium Musicum Choir and is a regular performer with Divas on Demand.

 

Natalia Melnik, Soprano

Natalia was born in Russia and moved to Sydney in 2013. At the age of thirteen she was granted a place in a children's concert choir Cantilena and later became the choir soloist, performing in numerous concerts and touring in Russia and Europe. Natalia continued her studies in Valentina Levko's Center of Vocal Art and later at the Australian Institute of Music. Currently Natalia is studying towards her Postgraduate Research Degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Natalia is an active performer appearing in lunchtime concerts at St.Stephen's Uniting Church, in the Sutherland Shire Symphony Orchestra Christmas concert 2016, in recitals at Glebe Justice Center, Australian Hall and others. In 2017 Natalia will sing in the production of the opera "La Caduta De' Decemviri" by A. Scarlatti performing the role of Valeria.

 

Mikayla Tate, Soprano

Mikayla holds a BMus in Classical Voice from AIM and is currently studying her Masters of Music. She has performed in musicals and opera in both Queensland and NSW including most recently AIM's production of Hänsel und Gretel (Dewfairy/Sandman and Gretel alternate). She has performed with companies such as Operantics, Pacific Opera and is looking forward to an Australian premiere of La Caduta de Decemviri with Ghandarve Music in which she will originate Virginia. Other credits include: Symphony of Australia tour, soloist performances with Sutherland Shire Symphony Orchestra, recitals at the Art Gallery of NSW, St Stephens and St Andrews and in 2016 Mikayla attained second place in the Australian Concerto and Vocal Competition.

 

Suzi Stengel, Soprano

Suzi Stengel is an Italian born, South African bred soprano who now calls Australia home. In South Africa she performed in many solo recitals with the Friends of Music and Not the Grahamstown Festival. She appeared regularly with the Baroque 2000 orchestra, the KwaZulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra and with the Early Music Ensemble. In Sydney she has been a regular performer at the St Andrews, the Art Gallery of NSW, and the St Stephens Lunch Time Concert Series. She recently performed with the Hourglass Ensemble at the Melbourne Recital Centre and at the Sydney Opera House. Over the years she has directed various choirs and vocal ensembles. Suzi is also the creative director of Artists Central and has recently completed the Masters of Music program at the Australian Institute of Music.

Colin Andrews was born in Bristol England. He studied at The Royal Academy of Music in London and at The Conservatoire de Muisque in Geneva, Switzerland. His principal Professors were Lionel Rogg and Dame Gillian Weir.

Colin Andrews was a prizewinner at both the 1980 & 1982 Dublin International Organ Competitions in Ireland. In 1993, The Royal Academy of Music in London bestowed an Associateship upon him in recognition of his distinguished performing career.

Mr. Andrews has toured worldwide as a concert organist, undertaking multiple tours of Asia, Europe and trans-continental tours of Russia. He has performed in all of the major concert halls in Asia, including Suntory Hall, Tokyo, Esplanade Theaters-on-the-Bay, Singapore, Beijing National Center for the Performing Arts, Shanghai Oriental Arts Center, Sydney Town Hall, Australia, Auckland Town Hall, New Zealand etc. Other concert venues have included The Royal Festival Hall, London, King's College, Cambridge, The Cathedral of Notre-Dame, Paris (3 appearances), The Moscow Conservatoire, The St. Petersburg Philharmonic Hall & Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall, St. Petersburg, Russia, The National Convention of The American Guild of Organists, plus, leading halls, Cathedrals & Churches throughout Europe, The United States of America, Siberia, South Africa & South America.

Mr. Andrews is an active teacher & lecturer and has been a faculty member of both East Carolina University and Indiana University. He has given lectures and masterclasses worldwide.

Colin Andrews has recorded 14 compact discs for the Naxos, Gothic, Loft, Priory & Zig Zag labels and has also recorded more than 30 programmes for the BBC in England. He has also appeared on television and radio in Japan, Belgium, Russia, Poland and New Zealand. He is frequently featured on the worldwide radio programme "Organroxx".

Andrews is one of only four organists in the world to have recorded the complete organ works of Olivier Messiaen. In 2012, Mr. Andrews was named a "Membre d'Honneur" of the "Association Grand Orgue Trinite Messiaen" based at Messiaen's church, "l'Eglise de la Sainte Trinite" in Paris. His recordings have been widely acclaimed; in 2012, the magazine, "Christianity Today" listed Mr. Andrews's recording of Messiaen's "l'Ascension" & "Messe de la Pentecote" in the top 10 recordings of Sacred Music.
