Malle Sijmen................................................................................... Jan Sweelinck (1562 – 1621)

In 1883 Hill & Son installed an organ of two manuals and 18 stops in the Creek Street Presbyterian Church, Brisbane. This church was demolished in 1886 and the organ was removed to their new church, St Paul’s Presbyterian Church, St Paul’s Terrace, Brisbane in 1889.  To open the organ, four Brisbane organists combined their talents to perform the first Organ Recital ever in Brisbane. This was held on Tuesday, 31st July, 1883 and was reviewed in the Brisbane Courier. As part of the Organ Historical Trust of Australia’s 30th annual Conference, Mark Quarmby performed selections from the opening recital on this organ on Monday, 1st October, 2007. Today he will be using the same Hill stops that were on the Brisbane Hill instrument. The pieces selected today and their comments from the Courier are as follows:

Andante from Organ Concerto Op.4, No. 1 ........................... George F. Handel (1685 – 1759)

The first part of the recital “concluded with an exceedingly fine rendering of a movement of Handel’s 1st organ concerto, a brilliant composition, acknowledged to be the best of Handel’s concertos.”

 Adagio in F (from Symphony No. 1).............................................. Joseph Haydn (1732 – 1809)

The combination of the flutes and strings were “exceedingly pleasing”.

Cantilène Pastorale............................................................... Alexandre Guilmant (1837 – 1911)

“A pastorale by Guilmant, a French organist, and written purposely to illustrate the effect of the Oboe stop, was beautifully rendered. In the course of this number a most agreeable effect was produced by employing one hand on the two manuals at the same time, thus producing a double melody.”

Grand Solemn March.................................................................... Henry Smart (1813 – 1879)

The recital was concluded “by a superb rendering of Smart’s ‘Grand Solemn March’, one of the most stately compositions ever written for the organ. It is needless to attempt a description of this composition. It must be heard to be appreciated.”

Echo Fantasia (Æolian).................................................................. Jan Sweelinck (1562 – 1621)

Kyrie, Gott heiliger Geist BWV 671 (Clavierübung III).......................... J.S. Bach (1685 – 1750)
