Sydney’s leading piano accompanists will be performing
with several advanced instrumental students.

At 21 years of age, Michael Last is completing his fourth and final year of a Bachelor of Music (Performance) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he studies flute with James Kortum. Michael graduated from St. Patrick’s College, Sutherland, in2006 where he was College Captain and Dux. For his academic achievements and leadership, Michael was awarded a University of Sydney Merit Scholarship. In 2009 he was a semi-finalist in the 2MBS-FM Young Performers Award and was also Musical Director of the Regals Musical Society production of Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Sweeney Todd.’ Michael has represented the Conservatorium on two international tours; to Europe in 2009 and more recently to Germany, performing with the Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra as part of the Bronnbach Festival. Michael has been a member of the Sydney Symphony’s training orchestra, ‘Sinfonia’ since 2009. Through this education program he has worked with renowned conductors, Richard Gill, Vladmir Ashkenazy and Yannick Nézet-Séguin and has been mentored by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Flute, Janet Webb, and 2nd Flute, Carolyn Harris. Michael is also part of Sydney Youth Orchestra’s Flagship Orchestra and this year is the recipient of the Grace Family Scholarship. Michael has performed as a soloist and in chamber music ensembles throughout Sydney and the South Coast. He is a founding member of the wind quintet, ‘Sydney Wind Collective.’

Dr. Jeanell Carrigan
Jeanell is presently a member of the ensemble staff at the Sydney Conservatorium of music. She has performed as a soloist, chamber musician and accompanist in Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and throughout Australia, and has recorded for the Bavarian Radio Corporation, the ABC and for regional stations in Australia on many occasions. As a member of the Novalis Quartet, Trio Novalis and Richter/Carrigan Duo she performs regularly for Musica Viva and other concert organisations.
She completed a Doctor of Creative Arts, from the University of Wollongong, in the area of Australian post-1970 solo piano repertoire and in June, 2010 will release her tenth solo compact disc of Australian piano music. In 2002 she received the national award of most outstanding contribution to the advancement of Australian music by an individual.
Anna O’Brien
Anna is presently completing a Master in Music degree at the Sydney Conservatorium with Goetz Richter. Last year she graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree and recently was a member of the Conservatorium Chamber Orchestra on their tour to Germany
Liisa Pallandi
Liisa is a student at the Conservatorium completing an honours degree. Last year she won the Sydney Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition and performed with The SYO the Tchaikovsky concerto to great acclaim. She has been a member of the AYO.
Anna Bernard
Anna is a final year student of Goetz Richter at the Sydney Conservatorium presently finishing her Bachelor of Music degree.

Mitzi Gardner
Mitzi is 10 years old and in year 5 at The Hills Grammar School where she is in several String Ensembles, Senior Orchestra, and the Choir. She is a student of Janet Davies and also attends the Sydney Conservatorium Rising Stars Program. Mitzi has performed solo violin at many concerts; at school, the Conservatorium of Music and other venues. Mitzi has participated in summer schools and classes in Sydney, Italy and the UK. Over the past few years Mitzi has won several prizes in Eisteddfods for her violin performances, as well as for her singing. Mitzi also participates in the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s Education Program – The Parramatta String Players.
Phoebe Gardner
Phoebe is 12 years old and in Year 7 at The Hills Grammar School, where she is in several String Ensembles, Senior Orchestra, and the Choir. She is a student of Janet Davies and also attends the Sydney Conservatorium Rising Stars Program. Phoebe has performed solo violin at many concerts; at school, the Conservatorium of Music and other venues. Phoebe has participated in summer schools and classes in Sydney, Italy and the UK. Over the past few years Phoebe has won several prizes in Eisteddfods for her violin performances, as well as for her original compositions. Phoebe also participates in the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s Education Program – The Parramatta String Players.
Hannah Buckley
Hannah Buckley is sixteen years old, and has loved music for as long as she can remember. She began playing the violin at the age of six, as a student of Robin Wilson and as a member of the Young Musicians Program at the Australian Institute of Music. Through AIM, Hannah performed as a soloist on numerous occasions at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and was also selected to perform on 2MBS-FM as a part of the Even Younger Performers recital series. In 2006, Hannah won a full music scholarship to MLC School in Burwood, and has performed in the Sydney Opera House (both as a soloist and an ensemble member) as a part of numerous MLC music concerts and as a performer in the Andrew McKinnon production of 'Scotland the Brave'. In both 2009 and 2010 (as a student of Janet Davies), Hannah won a full scholarship to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music's Open Academy 'Rising Stars' program, and, this year, she was a semi-finalist in the Ku-ring-gai NSW Secondary Schools Concerto Competition. Hannah also has a passion for acting, singing and musical theatre, and recently played a lead role in the MLC School musical, Gershwin's 'Crazy For You'.
Ariana Ricci
Ariana began violin studies at the age of 4 with Haruo Goto and piano with her parents, both professional pianists. In 2007, having just turned five, she was the youngest student to date to receive a full scholarship at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music’s Open Academy. She joined the Rising Starts program of the Open Academy in 2008 and began studies with Janet Davies. In 2009 she moved with her family to Auckland NZ where she studied violin with Elizabeth Holowell. Back in Sydney, she now continues her studies with Janet Davies and has occasional lessons with her grandfather Ruggiero Ricci in the U.S. via Skype and also master-classes with Wanda Wilkomirska.
Ariana loves to sing and act and is currently involved in a production with the Australian Theatre for Young People.
Johanna Blake
Johanna commenced her cello studies at the age of 5 with Takao Mizushima and from this year she has been a student of Susan Blake. She is in Year 8 at MLC school where she is on a full music scholarship and is enjoying the exciting and innovative music program there. She is also looking forward to travelling to Spain later this year with the MLC Orchestra. This year Johanna was also accepted into the Rising Stars program at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and has benefitted greatly from the opportunities offered there.
Marianne Broadfoot
Marianne Broadfoot is currently completing her PhD in Music Performance with Wanda Wilkomirska at the Sydney Conservatorium. She graduated from the Canberra School of Music in 2004 with First Class Honours, studying with Barbara Jane Gilby and Alice Waten.
Marianne joined the Sydney Symphony in 2008.
She has been the recipient of an Australian Postgraduate Award and the E. V. Llewellyn scholarship, which enabled her to study with Igor Ozim at the International Summer Academy in Salzburg in 2004 and 2005. She was an Emerging Artist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra in 2006 and has since performed and toured extensively with the orchestra.
Marianne Broadfoot was the winner of the Kendall National Violin Competition in 2002 and the Australian Concerto Competition in 2004. In the same year she won 2nd prize at the Gisborne International Music Competition in New Zealand.
In 2003 she performed with the Queensland Orchestra in the ABC Young Performers Awards Strings final. As recipient of a Young Artists Award in 1999, she performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. She has played as soloist with the Sydney Conservatorium Orchestra, Melbourne University Orchestra, Melbourne Youth Orchestra and the Barrier Reef Orchestra.
Marianne Broadfoot toured Europe with the Australian Youth Orchestra in 2001 and attended several National Music Camps. She was the Concertmaster of Melbourne Youth Orchestra for two years, and has also performed with the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra in Melbourne, and the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, as well playing in the Canberra International Chamber Music Festival.
She is currently first violinist with the Enigma Quartet who performed on Sunday Live for ABC Classic FM and toured New Zealand in 2008. She is a tutor at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music High School and has played in masterclasses for Pinchas Zukerman, David Takeno, Anthony Marwood, Vivane Hagner, Rudolf Koelman and Valerie Oistrakh.
Natalia Ricci
Australian born pianist Natalia Ricci enjoys a successful career as chamber musician, soloist and teacher, having performed and recorded internationally over the past 30 years in the USA, Canada, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand and throughout Europe including the capitals of London, Paris, Oslo, Prague, Berlin and Madrid.
Appearances in international music festivals have included the Gradus International Music Festival, Spain, the Bergen Festspillen, the Banff Summer Chamber Music Festival, Canada, the International Bartok Festival, Hungary, the London Objective Music Festival, the Deia International Festival Mallorca and the Sydney Symphony Contemporary Music Festival.
The recipient of numerous international awards and prizes, Natalia has made many recordings for the BBC, ABC, Canadian, Italian and Norwegian and New Zealand national radios and has also appeared in live concert telecasts in Italy, Norway, Spain and Australia.
As a collaborative artist, Natalia is especially recognized for her work with string players and has performed with renowned artists such as Ruggiero Ricci, Leonid Gorokhov, Kolja Blacher, Adelina Oprean, Eva Leon and Martin Rummel.
Natalia received her Bachelor of Music from the University of Cincinnati USA and her Masters of Music from RNCM in UK. Her most influential teachers have been the Hungarian pianists/pedagogues Bela Siki and Gyorgy Sebok, the Czech pianist Jiri Hlinka, the Russian pianists Sulamita Aronovsky and Tatiana Nikolayeva. and Natalia’s husband, pianist Gian-Franco Ricci.
Natalia joined the permanent staff of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 1999 where she has taught in both the piano and ensemble departments. Last year she took leave from the Sydney Conservatorium to take up an invitation to tutor as Senior Lecturer in Piano at the University of Auckland.
